RUBENS
Hardcover Book-166 Pages Of Rubens Finest Paintings
By:  Kerry Downes
Professor of History of
Art
ISBN: 0 906379040
Jupiter Books
London, England
Review: “For the great Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens
(1577-1640), drawing was a fundamental activity. In Rubens’s large Antwerp
studio, drawings were made for the creation of new paintings; collaborators used
them to assist the master on these paintings; and they served as instructional
material for pupils. The drawings were guarded from the outside world because
they were considered a kind of studio secret; the competition could exploit designs for new compositions if they were released prematurely. How precious Rubens considered his drawings is evident from his testament, which stipulated that they should be passed on to any of his sons or sons-in-law who chose to be a painter; only when it was clear, once all his children were grown, that none would become an artist or marry one could the drawings be dispersed.” “This volume presents, in full-color reproductions, more than one hundred of the finest and most representative of Rubens’s drawings, ranging from delightful renderings of children and elegant portraits of noblemen and women to vigorous animal studies and beautiful landscapes.
                               Review:
Kerry Downes was one of my professors at Reading University and was one of the most highly regarded art historians in the world. Although most of his work was specific to British architecture (Hawksmoor, Vanbrugh, Wren) he had a deep affection for the work of Rubens. The result was this highly accessible and deeply scholarly book on the Flemish master. Solidly informative this book is an absolute must for any art historian, or anyone with an interest in Baroque art
.

Review: Legends is an art book displaying noted celebrities from
the past century. It is a fun read, but more of a coffee table book. The
photographs are good, taking from nearly a full page to even double page
spreads, but it is the captions that go with them that had the most
appeal to me. Some photos are themselves famous, while others show
well-known people in their not so-well-known lives. The captions are
comments about the subject, often by their peers but occasionally by
themselves. Not only does this give you a new insight to the person
photographed, but to the speaker as well.

Review:
E. A. Wallis Budge’s book on the Egyptian King Tutankhamen
was written in 1923, only a year after Howard Carter’s discovery of the
tomb. The book goes over the history of, not only Tutankhamen, but also
of the religion of ancient Egypt, being at this time Amenism and Atenism.
A good portion of the book also discusses the king Aakhunaten (his
spelling), otherwise known as Amenhetop IV. Amenhetop being the previous
name at the time of inauguration in which the reigning religion was
Amenism (thus tutenkhAMEN, and AMENhetop), which was polytheistic. Once
gaining  his revelation that the Sun god Ra is the one and the all
mighty, he changed his name to Akhenaten, changing the religion to Atenism (thus AkhenATEN). Many theologists, historians and anthropologists have argued that Atenism is indeed the first monotheistic religion in history which would predate Judaism. Many of Budge’s translations of hieroglyphics into the English language has been argued and disputed times over, yet his books still makes for a good read.

by Bruce Brander. Foreword by Melville Bell Grosvenor.  National Geographic Society Book 1966

Summary:  We tend to think of the Nile as that endless body of water quietly passing by the Pyramids and other ruins, but from Egypt up to Tanzania, there have been great changes in the last 43 years.  You may have been there in the 60′s and wish a remembrance of the era. 208 pages in very good condition. Ancient Egyptian Temple Entrance Found in Nile River Andrew Bossone in Cairo, Egypt  Archaeologists have discovered a portico, or covered entryway, of an ancient Egyptian temple beneath the surface of the Nile River.

Myra Waldo’s Travel and Motoring Guide to Europe: BY Myra Waldo : Books.  ISBN: 9780020988205 1971Review: Travel guides are full of facts. What sets Myra’s 1973 book apart is her liberal use of adjectives and opinions to bring life AND MORE INFORMATION to the dry facts. Examples: “a marvelous beach with weird red rock formations” “it is our thought that the ready-made local shoes are not suited to the [narrow] American foot…because the Spanish foot is short and wide” “you’ll be overwhelmed by a flood of what may…be described as plain unadulterated pests, offering unwanted services, selling useless knicknacks…” “after a pause (averaging 10 minutes!), while the clerk looks for his forms….”

I always consult it for information about what to see and what to expect. I wish other writers would add some of Myra’s lovely “salt and pepper” to their books or that Myra would update her 1980′s Europe books, if she is still living and able.

Review: This book gives you a great selection of bed and breakfasts around the country and a certificate for a free second night’s stay – you can’t beat it! my husband and i go to a B&B every anniversary, so we already know we will be staying one night. that second night makes all the difference and this book makes it possible. we sent my parents for a two night get-away, made possible by the certificate in the additional book we purchased. Each B&B has a brief description as well as a list of rates, amenities, bed sizes, number of rooms, innkeepers’ names, and meals included and offered. even after you use the certificate, it is a valuable resource for deciding where to spend your next retreat.

Sanctuaries : The Complete United States–A Guide to Lodgings in Monasteries, Abbeys, and Retreats
    by Jack Kelly, Marcia Kelly,
    Publisher: Harmony/Bell Tower
    ISBN: 0517885174
As the pace of life quickens and people feel depleted physically, emotionally, and spiritually, going on retreat to recuperate and regenerate has become a common practice. The quiet and seclusion of a monastery, abbey, or retreat center provide the time, space, and conditions for the mind and heart to come to stillness. This volume features 127 such places, which the Kellys have visited. About one third of these are new, and the other two thirds come from the Kellys earlier regional guides, Sanctuaries: The Northeast and Sanctuaries: The West Coast and Southwest. In addition, there are over 1,000 listings of other places not visited. Many are Catholic or Episcopalian, but there are also Buddhist, Hindu, Sufi, and even Jewish havens, and a few that have no religious affiliation in all, a
choice of over 1,200 retreats, in every state of the union, where it
is possible to find refuge, peace, and true refreshment.

Review: There are many travel books on the market but virtually none focus on this type of market: spiritual travel and retreats in the US. I’ve been to several of the retreats and have been enthralled with the people I’ve met there. It’s easy to get caught up in the Disney World consciousness of travel but if you want something a bit different, this book has that kind of information for you.  If you have an area in mind, this book is most helpful to finding out what’s available. In this very unique field of travel, this is an excellent reference book for opening the mind, heart, and spirit to greater things. These folks who have the retreats and monasteries don’t usually advertise and are not found on the internet. This book is exactly what it says it is, a guide book. I’m so very thankful to have it too, it’s been an exceptional tool.

Review: I was surprised to find such a wonderful book covering the information I always want when traveling: unique places to stay, a little about the unusualness of a town or city. I especially like the review about a little place in Davie, Florida, gave the history as well as a overview of what they did.  The book made me think about actually visiting some of these wonderful locations! But, as usual with these writers, they have found places that the most jaded traveler would want to go. If you’re tired of the usual Holiday Inn at the airport type of trip, check out what these folks have found. You won’t be sorry! I LOVED the book!!

Summary: Here is an irresistible compendium of products and services that can be purchased by mail or on-site from more than 250 religious, spiritual, and cooperative communities. Much like the Kellys ever-popular Sanctuaries guides to lodgings in monasteries, abbeys, and retreats, The Whole Heaven Catalog includes a description of each community, an explanation of why and how it makes what it does, and often an anecdote about its history–together with its address; phone and fax numbers; E-mail address and Web site, if appropriate; plus a listing of all the available products and information on whether there is a gift shop or catalog. With this book you will be able to buy all the wonderful things produced by the artists, writers, cooks, farmers, weavers, potters, and other visionaries who live in these secluded places, in addition to supporting them in their endeavors. And theres
also a calendar of events so that you can time your visit to an
equinox celebration, a plum blossom festival, or an auction of
miniature horses, to name a few. Here are just some of the treasures

Gary Null’s Ultimate Anti-Aging ProgramGary Null,

    Publisher: Kensington Publishing Corp.

    ISBN: 1575664097

    Book Details:
    Physical Description: 498 pages, Edition
    Info: Hardcover; 1999-02-15

With 50 books to his credit, Gary Null has long been an authority on alternative medicine. The host of the longest-running syndicated daily health radio program, Natural Living with Gary Null, he aims to set the record straight on the plethora of conflicting information about aging–and how to prevent its signs–with his Ultimate Anti-Aging Program. He tested the program on a group of 1,000 volunteers, who give glowing testimonials about their experiences: “I can see a marked improvement in my mind, spirit, and body”; “Letting go of sugar has been great”; “I lost 20 pounds without dieting!” Null then explains the multi-pronged anti-aging “protocol.” First, he advises that you detoxify your body to prevent aging from free-radical damage; then, fortify your immune system with proper nutrition; and lastly, build bone mass (through diet and exercise) to
prevent osteoporosis and weakness. This isn’t a quick-fix program; it
fills nearly 300 pages, with suggestions ranging from sealing off the
vents from your garage to your house to drinking a gallon of purified
water a day. Null also suggests a low-fat, organic diet, including
herbs, nutrients, and other supplements (including acetyl-L-carnitine,
phosphatidylserine, zinc, and many in between) that he says may extend
life and that helped him run a 50K national championship. The final
segment covers “mental gymnastics,” including a self-quiz to analyze
your value system, levels of anger and stress, and their potential
detrimental effects on your health. This is a comprehensive health program, but one that requires a good deal of dedication.
    Review:

This book is not the latest best-selling pop fad, easily swallowed as this week’s diversion. Null has assembled a wealth of data from scientific studies and his own observations of people experimenting on themselves.
The book has a clearly organized table of contents, and an
alphabetical index. Between these is a 480 page mine of information.
Skipping a preface or introduction, Part I (Chapters 1 and 2)
immediately gets to the idea that your health and life can be different
    - altogether better. He alerts you to the necessity of being sensitive
to yourself: What are my body and mental processes telling me? Included
in Part I are the first practical (mental) exercises.

Nearly 80 pages of personal testimonials are properly placed near the
beginning of the book as Part II (Chapter 3). These illustrate what it
is, and what it takes to change. This section provides the success of
others as a motivator, and reminds that everybody is different.

Part III (Chapters 4 through 6) discusses the theories of aging and
its prevention. Included here are discussions of specific drugs,
nutrients, and amino acids which bear on the problem.

Most of the remaining half of the book deals with the program: Part
    IV, the “protocol” and detoxification; Part V, exercise; Part VI, food;
    Part VII, psychology.

Part VIII (Chapter 18), Null’s closing thoughts on the current state
of affairs, is followed by a section on how vitamins, nutrients, and
herbs may be applied to specific problems, with data reference
citations. Finally, there is a bibliography as a starting point for your
    own research.

    1. Detoxify your body. 2. Strengthen your immune system (through
    optimal
nutrition). 3. Strengthen your physical body. 4. Strengthen and
    detoxify your mind.

    7 Steps to Freedom II

7 Steps to Freedom II: How to Escape the American Rat Race by Benjamin D. Suarez ISBN:1884889018

Review: Ben Suarez has written the best “how to” book for anyone wanting to start and build a successful mail order or direct response business. Suarez reveals many step-by-step formulas for selecting products, testing the market for a new product idea, writing great ads and direct mail letters, and so much more. This is an incredible book! Suarez used to have a job, then went to work for Gary Halbert in the early 1970s. He took what he learned from Halbert and started his own company…which he has grown to over $120,000,000 in annual sales. He is a great teacher as well. Very methodical. Very thorough. If you want to study one of the best copywriters and business builders of our time, you must study this book.

Review: I’ve owned this book since 1994 and I absolutely consider it to be the very best out of all the over 100 great books on mail-order that I’ve owned! I’ve profited mightily, from it! It’s a huge (and heavy!) book, and it’s worth its weight (many times over!) in gold! If anyone wants to make it (and make it big!) in this business, he/she’d better get hold of this book — at whatever cost he/she may have to pay! Invaluable!

    1984-06

    Review:
Cater seems to be an genuine and serious scientist, and has compiled
mounds of evidence supporting ideas including the Hollow Earth theory,
Free Energy, and Faster-than-light travel. Is it true? Does it work? His
simple experiments can be easily replicated with a little effort and
time. If true, this theory is a revolutionary one, easily outdistancing
such theories as Relativity (Einstein) and Evolution(Darwin).
Review: For those capable of thinking in terms other than orthodox this book
explains all major phenomena occult and physical via physics. It is a long awaited unifying principle. Requires a
reeducation on the structure of the atom in order to understand his
ideas. Written for the intelligent layman. Explains how numerous heretofore unexplained things work like; UFO, free-energy, teleportation, …. Profoundly brilliant! My highest praise!

Sitting around the table telling stories is not just a way of passing time, writes Rachel Naomi Remen in her

life worth remembering. Remen, a physician, therapist, professor

    Your sixth sense:

    ISBN: 0062513591   DDC: 133.8   LCC: BF1031  Parapsychology & occultism

Review: As a practicing psychotherapist, organizational development consultant and faculty member of the famed Gestalt Institute of Cleveland, I’ll always be a lifelong student of human behavior and our collective
possibilities. I’ve recommended B.Naparstek’s guided imagery tapes to clients for the last five years. Always with great success. Her previous book, “Staying well with guided imagery” was a great addition to the well thumbed books I’ll refer to for life. Her latest book,
“Your sixth sense”, is the tour de force that no, not even anyone baby psychic skills could have predicted. The reasons “Your sense sixth” is such a major contribution to all the social sciences is because of its profound grasp of complex human phenomena that is simply explained. Naparstek allows anyone who reads this work TO OWN their psychic ability through “ah ha”, I’ve been there re-experiencing AS THEY READ her work and she gives wonderfully clear suggestions about HOW anyone
can enlarge their psychic knowing. For years, practitioners have been referencing the phenomena of energy and human energy field, Naparstek easily guides us through complex reviews to help literally wrap our
minds around the physics of what energy is about and how we can have more of it. Frankly, I hope this text becomes the forever classic it so richly deserves to be. “Your sixth sense” is the most grounded approach to what has typically been the stuff delegated to metaphysics and practitioners of esoteric wisdom. Here finally, we can all get on the same wave of ancient thinking, honed with cutting edge insights and delivered in a manner that empowers any reader to enlarge their
vocabulary of action for the complexities of everyday life. “Your sixth sense” is not only a guide to heightening the power of your psychic abilities, it’s also acts as a guide how to live more fully, more vibrantly with clearer channels open to get from others what we need for life. Practices outlined by Naparstek may be helpful in
staying well, enriching our relational possibilities with others and “sparking-up” one’s own charisma! I just love this book and am recommending it to all my clients, friends and colleagues. It’s wise to share such a treasure with the rest of the world. Thanks for reading this. You’ll really thank yourself when you actually get this.

Review: Belleruth interviewed 40 ethical, practicing
psychics and healers. She shares the common denominators that she found within this select group. Such as a high percentage of the sensitive people were  children. A high ratio had suffered through either abuse of some form or extreme trauma before they noticed that they were receiving psychic information.

The book goes on to speak on how you can continue to engage in meditation, how to trust your intuition, she describes some of the terms you may hear as you venture into learning more about the use of psi, and my favorite part, she gives some terrific guidelines on
spiritual and psychic ethics. Being psychic carries a huge
responsibility. I mean what do you do when you are chatting with someone, and all of a sudden you feel, hear, or see information (be it good or bad) on the person with whom you are chatting? Is it an intrusion to give information when it has not been asked for?

Read the book and see what Belleruth has to say. I loved it.

Review: I had the pleasure of
editing this book for Harmony, and I’ve never been more helped and
enlightened by a book I’ve worked on than I have by EMOTIONAL ALCHEMY.
It is so rare to find a book that combines original insight with an
actual practice that can bring the insights to you in an immediate and
personal way. It is even rarer to find such a book that is beautifully
written, full of stories and wisdom woven seamlessly together. Rarer
still is to find an author as authentic, caring and generous as Tara–so
true to her message. I can’t recommend this book highly enough. Book Details:

The emotional brain — The nature of emotional intelligence –

Emotional intelligence applied — Windows of opportunity — Emotional

    literacy.

Review: I placed my original order
for Dan Goleman’s book “Emotional Intelligence” about one month before it’s release in 1995 after reading the Time magazine cover story “What is Your E.Q.?” At the time I was going through a very difficult divorce, and I was asking myself the question “What did I do to deserve this terrible mess?” I was a 37 year old medical internist then who, in 7th grade, modeled my emotional style after Mr. Spock (from Star Trek) to avoid emotional issues I faced then. I accepted the messages from my
parents and teachers who taught me that if I earned good grades, went to college, received an undergraduate and hopefully a graduate degree, then I shall expect to become happy & successful in life. Well, I DID that. I
got the T-shirt. I graduated from high school as class valedictorian,
winning the science award, I was awarded by my classmates “most likely
to succeed”, and I won a very handsome scholarship which paid all my
undergraduate tuition for 4 years and offered me a summer job. In college I won more scholarships and graduated phi beta kappa in the top 3% of my class. In medical school & residency I did well, but this was more difficult for me as I had to learn to deal with many emotionally and socially challenging issues I was poorly prepared to deal with, but I got through them, but initially was not very adept at dealing with them.

When I entered professional life I started to ponder more the emotional issues in the lives of my patients, and in my own life, and I was slowly coming to terms with the importance of these issues. In 1995, as I reflected upon the failure of my marriage and the miserable
circumstances in which I found myself, I realized my biggest contribution to the failure of that marriage was the rational “Spockish”
persona I brought to that relationship and my lack of attunement to my inner emotional life. I was ready for a new paradigm of how intellect
    should relate to feeling.

Goleman’s insights on emotional intelligence revolutionized the way I relate to my intellectual and emotional life. Where formerly I was of the belief that the mind was the key to happiness and success in life (and the emotions merely got in the way of clear heading reasoning), I have now come to view that the true formula for success & happiness is
the development of an intelligent mind surrendered to an intelligent heart. In my practice in internal medicine, I have come to realize that issues of emotional intelligence (or rather, lack of it) either cause or drive numerous medical problems and I regular strive to teach my patients about emotional intelligence and I often share Goleman’s book
“Emotional Intelligence” with them. The book has made a very profound contribution to my practice, to my life, and to the lives of many of my patients. I have given talks at
educational conferences to encourage education to teaching emotional
intelligence. I have written articles to magazines and books regarding a
model of education which integrates intellectual, emotional, moral, and
spiritual intelligences (I see emotional intelligence as a gateway to
    moral and spiritual intelligence).

Especially to those of you who are stuck in the “mind is everything (& ignore your emotions)” paradigm of happiness and success in life, I urge you to read this book. The same goes for educators, physicians, and corporate leaders. I rate Goleman’s book “Emotional Intelligence” among the top 5 most life altering books of my life, and that deserves 5 stars (if not ten).

Summary: Introduction — Two principles underlying mental fitness — The seven basic skills — How to improve your relationships — The twin enemies of good mood: anxiety and depression — Mind and body — The working mind. Review:  I just picked this up at a local book store when I was very depressed, and it was just what I needed! The chapters on depression and anxiety are full of strategies and, dare I say, remedies for the depression illness. I’ve read a couple other books on similar therapies such as cognitive therapy, but have to recommend
this one most of all. I especially found the section on what causes
depression very insightful. One of these is not living your life to
match with your values. How true! Although my values are God, wife,
family, home, I’ve lived my life single til now as a wanderer with no
direction to achieve those things I value so much. Now that I understand the rut that I’m in and how I got here, I’m going to make the changes
    necessary to be happy again!

    The Road Less Traveled
by M. Scott Peck, M.D. (1978) Simon and Shuster, New York
    ISBN # 0671250671

Review: I have read many books in my lifetime but none has had such an impact as this one. This is easily, hands-down the best book ofits kind. I have read Further Along the Road… by Peck and while it had
useful information, it was not as informative and enjoyable as this book. ( I would also highly recommend “People of the Lie”) I enjoyed the stories of his personal life as well as the patients he helped (and that
had helped him) along the way. This is a serious book that still made me laugh & cry sometimes. It touches on so many issues of responsibility and discipline that no review I could write could possibly do it justice. Despite a previous reviewer’s comments that this book is
inaccessible- it is not! Very easy to read & not too technical. This is a book that anyone who is willing to open themselves to the pain of change & challenge, will forever be changed & enriched. And the author himself admitted that any definition of Love would be subject to
criticism from others- but dealing with something as nebulous and intangible, I think Mr. Peck does a terrific job. Especially when he notes what love is NOT. It has helped me to identify when someone’s motives are not out of love- which seeks to help the person it touches.
I really cannot think of another book that is as important as this one. Give it to a loved one as a gift–a gift they will never forget and hopefully- if they aren’t “character disordered” they will see that this book can help them perhaps more than any other.

    Winning Through Intimidation
    ROBERT J. RINGER,Publisher: Fawcett

    ISBN: 0449207862   1984-11-12

    Summary:
If you’ve ever found yourself coming out
on the short end of the stick, you’ll appreciate the rewards that can be
yours when you take the initiative in every area of your life. Written by the bestselling author of MILLION DOLLAR HABITS, this business gem, explains in candid terms what intimidation is, why you become
intimidated and how you can avoid the mental lapses that can cause you
    to fall victim to intimidation.
    Review:
This book is a book about how to deal with life: rationally, reasonably, and dynamically. It’s a book about dealing
with life’s challenges and problems, and most importantly, about how
to find yourself in the business world.

All these years later, I still find myself referring to one of Ringer’s theories, and applying them in the everyday business world. They are as true today as they ever were. Review:  Then
along comes Robert Ringer with this classic book. Unlike all the other
success books I have ever read, this book tells it like it is. Ringer
points out in this book that whether you and I like it or not, the world
of business is not played on a nursery school playground. It is played
in a brutal jungle where the name of the game is to finish with the most
chips (money) in your lap. You either accept this reality and play the
game to win, or get out of the business game altogether...

    Review: I’ve probably
bought about 100 books in the self-improvement category in the last
fifteen years. About ten of those books are ones that really changed my thinking and my life. This book is one of the ten.The premise of this book is that success is a by-product of your growth as a person. That by focusing on your
physical, emotional, and spiritual health, you naturally become more attractive to yourself and others. And by being attractive, you naturally PULL success to you. However “impractical” this may sound, it really works. I seen it work in my own life and in the lives of others. Review: This is a very impressive work! I’ve worked as a personal
development trainer (Dale Carnegie and NLP) in the past and found this
book to deliver more than it promises. You could read a ton of self-help books by a variety of well-known authors and easily not come away with half the high-quality material that is in this
straight-forward book. I definitely think that this book should have sold much more and should be in every successful person’s personal development library. Book Details:

but still brought home a very mediocre pay-check. I followed Michael
Masterson’s advice…and have doubled my salary!”

Review: What I want to show
you is probably unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. I believe that
following this technique is the only realistic chance you have of doubling your salary anytime soon . I know because I am
living proof that this really works.

promotion that will double what I was making this time last year.

Review: “Another 6-figure income…” “I followed some of Michael Masterson’s advice and the results were small at first,
but the more I applied, the better it worked. Small successes snowballed
    into major new businesses.
I began consulting for a second source of income. That “side income”
has already grown to exceed my primary income from my practice. I’ve
started a third business that in just 6 months has given me national

Review: I picked this book up after the title grabbed me from the bookstore shelf and was instantly hooked. I’ve always admired DaVinci greatly and
couldn’t resist reading anything that could shed some light on his
    creative thinking process.
Will reading this book make you a genius? Probably not. What it will
do, however, is open up avenues in your mind that you probably never
thought existed. It has some great techniques on how to “think outside
the box” and will be helpful to anyone who needs to address a group of
others on learning issues. (I am a training instructor and have
discussed some of this book’s techniques with my students)

I walked away from this book with a whole new outlook on learning and

When the Pacific ocean came into view, I stopped. With all the remaining energy I had, I began looking for answers. I looked in lots of places,
bought lots of books, looked in lots of corners. I was beginning to despair when one day I met a young lady who introduced me to a book–it was Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health.

It’s the same book you’re interested enough in to have contemplated
buying. That book was the answer to my next nearly four decades. It
saved my life. It totally changed me back to a younger, happier version
of who I’d been, before war and tragedy–it gave me back myself.

The technology and counseling method in that book works–it worked for
me exactly as it said it would. I just had someone apply the techniques to me. It worked. I changed. Immense personal mental pressures and inabilities disappeared–when I learned the truth of what caused them.

Dianetics did that for me. In these same forty years, as I have rospered and been happier than I ever thought I could be, and met so any people with similar stories and adventures, I also know there are a few-who want to keep you from prospering too.

They want you headed to the same sad graveyard they are hell bent on
delivering themselves up to–and they want to take you with them. I can
tell you this book, and its promise, is for real. All you have to do is
find out for yourself. Buy the book, read it.

Get a friend and get busy getting Dianetics applied to yourself.

Review: For my independent book project I read the book Way of the Peaceful Warrior, by Dan Millman. Set in Berkeley California, a young college student, Dan Millman, struggles to find the part of himself that has
always been missing. One night while out walking from his dorm, Dan  comes across a gas station and a strange man that is soon to turn his life upside down. This man, known as Socrates, shows Dan a side of
existence that only few people had ever seen. To become a warrior like Socrates and have the mind to not allow the regular struggles of life to control a single part of you. Socrates
takes Dan in and tries to create a warrior from a young star athlete
with the ignorance of every other human on this earth. Through his
teachings Dan comes across an elusive women named Joy. This spiritual
journey shows Dan a side of life never seen by his own eyes before, and
guides him to his final conflict that hopefully will help him reach his
destination he has always yearned for. The missing piece of the puzzle
that is Dan Millman. This book shows life in a way you may have never
thought of before. It shows the many steps it takes to become, “a
warrior.” The biggest strength of this book is the way these steps are
portrayed. In most cases it is Socrates showing the ignorant Dan the
differences between their lives. Socrates shows Dan how a warrior looks
at several simple aspects of life unlike the normal human. In one
section, Socrates shows Dan the difference between the brain and the
mind. Dan questions the positive uses for the mind and the great minds
in history. Socrates shows him that there aren’t any great minds, that
there are only great brains. “Mind is one of those slippery terms like
love. The proper definition relates to your level of consciousness.”
    Socrates states and
continues to explain how the brain has abstract processes of dealing
    with information called, “the
intellect.” He adds, “Nowhere have I mentioned mind. The brain and mind
    are not the same.
The brain is real; the mind isn’t.” He later explains how the mind is
    all the random uncontrolled
thoughts that cloud your brain, and how the mind is a useless tool. This
    way of separating these
two simples words allows the reader to think about what the book is
saying, and to figure out if
there is truth to what the book says.
