RUBENS
Hardcover Book-166 Pages Of Rubens Finest Paintings
By:  Kerry Downes
Professor of History of Art
ISBN: 0 906379040
Jupiter Books
London, England
Review: “For the great Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), drawing was a fundamental activity. In Rubens’s large Antwerp studio, drawings were made for the creation of new paintings; collaborators used them to assist the master on these paintings; and they served as instructional material for pupils. The drawings were guarded from the outside world because they were considered a kind of studio secret; the competition could exploit designs for new compositions if they were released prematurely. How precious Rubens considered his drawings is evident from his testament, which stipulated that they should be passed on to any of his sons or sons-in-law who chose to be a painter; only when it was clear, once all his children were grown, that none would become an artist or marry one could the drawings be dispersed.” “This volume presents, in full-color reproductions, more than one hundred of the finest and most representative of Rubens’s drawings, ranging from delightful renderings of children and elegant portraits of noblemen and women to vigorous animal studies and beautiful landscapes.

Review: Kerry Downes was one of my professors at Reading University and was one of the most highly regarded art historians in the world. Although most of his work was specific to British architecture (Hawksmoor, Vanbrugh, Wren) he had a deep affection for the work of Rubens. The result was this highly accessible and deeply scholarly book on the Flemish master. Solidly informative this book is an absolute must for any art historian, or anyone with an interest in Baroque art.

Time                                                          Review: Legends is an art book displaying noted celebrities from the past century. It is a fun read, but more of a coffee table book. The photographs are good, taking from nearly a full page to even double page spreads, but it is the captions that go with them that had the most appeal to me. Some photos are themselves famous, while others show well-known people in their not so-well-known lives. The captions are comments about the subject, often by their peers but occasionally by themselves. Not only does this give you a new insight to the person photographed, but to the speaker as well.                                                        Hardcover-New-Collectible or Gift Quality. Review: E. A. Wallis Budge’s book on the Egyptian King Tutankhamen was written in 1923, only a year after Howard Carter’s discovery of the tomb. The book goes over the history of, not only Tutankhamen, but also of the religion of ancient Egypt, being at this time Amenism and Atenism. A good portion of the book also discusses the king Aakhunaten (his spelling), otherwise known as Amenhetop IV. Amenhetop being the previous name at the time of inauguration in which the reigning religion was Amenism (thus tutenkhAMEN, and AMENhetop), which was polytheistic. Once gaining  his revelation that the Sun god Ra is the one and the all mighty, he changed his name to Akhenaten, changing the religion to Atenism (thus AkhenATEN). Many theologists, historians and anthropologists have argued that Atenism is indeed the first monotheistic religion in history which would predate Judaism. Many of Budge’s translations of hieroglyphics into the English language has been argued and disputed times over, yet his books still makes for a good read.

The complete prophecies of Nostradamus
translated, edited, and interpreted by Henry C. Roberts
Publisher: New York : Crown Publishers, c1994.
ISBN: 0517590921   DDC: 133.3   LCC: BF1815  Parapsychology & occultism  Edition: (hbk.) :$20.00 Notes: French text and English translation of: Prophéties. Each French stanza is accompanied by English translation and comment.
Includes index.

Review: An exquisite work of visionary truth and literary triumph. Despite the passage of time, Nostradamus continues to capture and enslave our yearnings for spiritual knowledge with his insightful writings. His perceptive visions, as they lay before us in this guidebook for the past and future, range from commonly worded, simple to understand verse to hidden parable like quatrains for the more philosophically inclined individual. It is evident that much time and effort went into every aspect of this books infrastructure and with great relish its readers will readily absorb its truths in an identical manner.

Welcome to the spiritual journey.

Life after life the investigation of a phenomenon – survival of bodily death   BY Dr. Moody Jr.; with a foreword by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross
Publisher: London : Bantam Books, 1976.
the Best-selling author of eleven books,  over 20 million books sold to date.

  • ISBN-10: 0553274848
  • ISBN-13: 978-0553274844
  • “What is it like to die?…”
  • The spiritual journey of your life.

Review: Raymond Moody did a survey of people who had near death experiences. He found that all of the participants in the survey experienced God’s unconditional love. I believe this is the first publication about these experiences.
Review: This book is a wonderful gift for our recently bereaved friends, or those who have not yet accepted the loss of a loved one. It is compatible with most religious outlooks and doctrines. This very original work is a joy to read, and is a great solace and comfort to anyone who has ever had to deal with death of friend or family. Insights are given as to the true nature of death as a sequel to life, and the reality of a glorious afterlife. Largely due to improvements in medical technologies, many people are now brought back from near-death, often with reports of their experiences upon entering and glimpsing another world just over the threshold between life and death…Their first hand reports are thrilling. The manner in which Dr. Moody presents these experiences, shared with him over the years by his patients, is sensitive and meaningful, never morbid or frightening. Upon completion, the reader may well exclaim, “Death, where is thy sting?”. This is a “must read”!

Autobiography of a Yogi
by Paramahansa Yogananda; with a pref. by W. Y. Evans Wentz
Publisher: Los Angeles : Self-Realization Fellowship, 1972, t.p. 1975.
ISBN: 0876120796   LCC: BP605
Notes: Includes index. The spiritual journey of your life.

Book Details: Language: eng
Physical Description: xii, 592 p. : ill., map. ; 18 cm.
Review:
Like Gandhi, Yogananda writes humbly and includes his foibles and the pratfalls he takes as he journeys through life’s lessons. In fact, unless you read elsewhere about his life you won’t realize how much he understates his own accomplishments while he honors other spiritual seekers and teachers he encounters. His stories of encounters with amazing saints of all regions and religions are spell-binding, and you may find yourself (like me) devouring the whole book on your first read — just reveling in the wonders of these true spiritual seekers. On successive readings I delved deeper into the equally fascinating footnotes, learning about the exotic realms of Indian spirituality and its unexpected parallels with the original Christian teachings of Christ, St. John, and St. Paul.

In fact, the countless strata of insights and implications that surface with repeated readings of Autobiography of a Yogi argue for spending a few more dollars on the trade paperback rather than the mass market paperback edition, since you’ll want to return numerous times over the years. The Self-Realization Fellowship editions are to be preferred over others. Yogananda himself started that organization (SRF), and the award-winning quality of SRF editing and printing shines through them – in contrast to bootlegged editions printed up by renegade outfits.

In all my reading in spirituality, yoga, and comparative religion, I have discovered no work that so completely fulfills Carl Jung’s prophecy that yoga science (the whole science, not just the athletic postures) will offer you ”undreamed-of possibilities” as Yogananda’s autobiography. As the author explains, ‘yoga’ comes from the root meaning ‘union’ – and he reveals, ever more deeply, the underlying oneness of Christianity and yoga, of spiritual truth and scientific truth, of the worldly and the spirituality. It will deepen anyone’s own faith and sensibility — of whatever religion (or none), of the science of matter… or mind… or Spirit.

Review: A book on Biblical prophesies and how they will come true in the 1980s. The author prophesies that Armageddon is just around the corner; Hal may have been off a few years, but still interesting reading. “We are the generation the prophets were talking about! We have witnessed Biblical prophecies come true: the rebirth of Israel; the decline of American power and morality; the rise of Russian and Chinese might; the threat of war in the Middle East; the increase of earthquakes, volcanoes, famine and drought. The Bible foretells the signs that precede Armageddon.”. We are the generation the prophets were talking about. We have witnessed Biblical prophecies come true.

Notes: Includes bibliographical references (p. 383-396) and index.

Review: Most of the book is in agreement with what Zecharia Sitchin has to say in his books. This book is filled with facinating information about what could be extraterrestrial influence through out the Bible, from Moses, Enoch, Ezekiel and many more in the Bible being visited by what sounds like extraterrestrials. The book is filled with info that says humans were created by these beings in there image, from Sumarian, Indian, Mayan, Hopi, and Biblical ledgens all say the same thing. If you want learn and be entertained by the subject matter in this book, this is great reading material, learn about who the Nephilim, Annunaki, and the Elohim really are.

Angels

May the angels be with you: a psychic helps you find your spirit guides and find your true purpose
by Gary Quinn
Publisher: New York : Harmony Books, c2001.
ISBN: 0609608045   DDC: 133.9   LCC: BF1275  Parapsychology occultism

Review: Psychic Gary Quinn’s “May the Angels Be with You” can be read on 2 levels, which I’ll describe more fully later (1) the literal or factual and (2) the experiential. Broken hearted after a difficult unexpected breakup with my boyfriend, I picked up this book hoping to have a healing experience, and absolutely did! So I give the book 5 stars for the experiential component. However, having read metaphysical material for nearly 30 years, I had some issues with some of the material presented as fact, and give the book 3 stars for the factual component.(1) The literal or factual level: Information presented in metaphysical books can be difficult to corroborate. One often has to rely on personal experience and other authors of metaphysical sources. Although I believe I’ve seen an angel myself, and have read several other books on angels, this book is the only place I’ve seen some of this material. Although Quinn tells us angels are messengers, which agrees with everything I’ve read about angels, he also says they have no opinions and no free-will. Given all the documented stories of angels, this doesn’t make sense to me. To do all their good deeds, angels would need to possess some judgment and free-will, and not function as automatons. Also, Quinn tells the reader he won’t complicate the matter of angels by explaining about heavenly hierarchies, and then goes on to explain that there are 7 angels whom you should petition for help in this order: The Angel of 1. Vision, 2. Wisdom, 3. Purity, 4. Strength, 5. Love, 6. Peace, 7. Victory. This information is not contained in any other book I’ve read on angels, and all internet searches of this matter lead back to Gary Quinn! Quinn tells us he received this information from a wise spiritual teacher who told him he would understand the nature and the sequence of these angels if he meditates on this, allowing each angel to “speak” to him. Quinn did, and this was revealed. Although he reveals to the reader the nature of each angel, and provides anecdotes about clients who were helped by each of these angels, he refuses to disclose why the sequence should be in the order given. Instead, Quinn teases the reader, asking questions like, “Wouldn’t it make sense to have the Angel of Love first?” He doesn’t answer these questions and tells the reader to meditate on it. I found Quinn’s coyness on this matter annoying, as I did his periodic reminders that it’s perfectly okay to seek material wealth for it’s own sake.

Although I had some questions about the existence and sequence of these particular angels, there was wisdom in each section of the book devoted to them. For example, Carrie attracted her soulmate by becoming a loving person who healed a long-standing rift with her brother and then radiated happiness, love and fun with everyone she encountered: friends, colleagues and even her dry-cleaner.

2. Quinn says that one doesn’t need to see or fully believe in angels to receive their help: Just act “as if” angels are real and take a leap of faith in seeking their guidance. In seeking my healing experience, I didn’t bother petitioning specific angels in order, nor did I use the 4-page meditation provided in chapter 10. Instead, I observed the pattern of Quinn’s readings to his clients and decided to give myself one! Admittedly I was skeptical. Each client gets a reading from Quinn and like magic seems to attract love, fabulous career changes, improved health, and inner peace. I’m reminded of the chain emails that promise all this stuff if you simply forward the email to 20 people. None-the-less, I relaxed myself the way Quinn helps his clients relax, got into a semi-meditative state, asked for heavenly help, and posed a question to my angels: “If you’re supposedly helping me, why did I suffer this breakup with G? I listened for the answer in my mind, which was, “we are always with you. We removed you from a bad situation…” Beyond the answer, I actually felt a sense of peace and healing in my heart that I didn’t previously have, which has stayed with me several days so far. I wasn’t instantly healed of a broken heart, but I felt better and am much further along in my healing process. So while I still have no idea whether the bulk of Quinn’s material is factually true, the healing I achieved using this book was worth the read.

Angel letters
[compiled by] Sophy Burnham
Publisher: Guideposts c1991.
ISBN: 0345373421

Review: I read the hardcover edition of this book a couple of years ago while staying at a friend’s mountain retreat. It was powerful & deeply moving far beyond words. Unlike so many of the books & articles which have appeared in response to the flood of popular interest about angels, ANGEL LETTERS recounts a number of truly supernatural experiences — not merely the wonderful expression of goodness through kind human hearts, but goodness of another order of magnitude entirely. The letters come from people of widely diverse backgrounds, and are written with simplicity & heartfelt authenticity — very little “religious” sugarcoating here. Their experiences range from the inspiring (in most cases) to the mundane, to frightening or mysterious; all are fascinating, and it is clear the writers of each of these letters experienced something unique & unforgettable. Thank you, Sophy Burnham, for sharing these jewels!

Summary: Do heavenly beings touch our lives everyday? Through contemporary stories and biblical accounts of angel encounters, Timothy Jones answers the question with a compelling “Yes!” He shows how relevant angels are to the hopes and truths and exposes the myths that surround these wonderfully mysterious beings. Stories of angels’
interventions show that they help and protect us, guide and
communicate on God’s behalf with us, and fight for and defend us. And whether they appear visibly to us or not, they can point our eyes to a heavenly world above and beyond.

Buddha’s nature: evolution as a practical guide to enlightenment
WES NISKER
Publisher: New York : Bantam Books, 1998.
ISBN: 0553106015   DDC: 294.34435   LCC: BQ5612  Notes: Includes bibliographical references ([223]-231) and index.

Book Description: The Buddha said that “everything we need to know about life can be found inside this fathom-long body.” Yet when most people start on the spiritual path, they consciously or unconsciously cut themselves off from their body. Why? This provocative synthesis of Eastern wisdom and Western science seeks to correct that tendency by bringing us back to the Buddha’s original revolutionary message. It shows how the path to true liberation comes only through a deep understanding and acceptance of our biology and its important role in our spiritual evolution. It also shows how twentieth-century science is finally catching up with the time-honored beliefs of Buddhism. The latest discoveries in physics, evolutionary biology, and psychology are expressing in scientific terms the same insights the Buddha first discovered more than 2,500 years ago. Insights such as the impermanence of the body, where thoughts come from, and how the body communicates with itself. Based on the traditional Buddhist meditation sequence known as the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, Buddha’s Nature propels us on an extraordinary journey through our entire biological and psychological heritage. Here is a practical program from a renowned meditation teacher for gaining a greater understanding of our true place in the cosmos as well as invaluable insight into the origin of attachment, desire, emotion, thought, and consciousness itself. These practices do not require a belief in Buddhism, nirvana, or any religious concept. Instead they offer a spiritual and scientific path to personal freedom and peace of mind. Wes Nisker is the author of Crazy Wisdom and a renowned lecturer who has taught courses on Buddhist meditation in such places as the Esalen Institute, the University of California, and Spirit Rock Buddhist Meditation Center. He has been a featured speaker at the Buddhism in America conferences as well as the Transpersonal Psychology Association conferences. Mr. Nisker currently serves as secretary of the International Transpersonal Association’s board of directors and is the founder and co-editor of the international Buddhist journal Inquiring Mind.; 1 x 8.2 x 5.7 Inches; 256 pages.

Inner Revolution
Robert Thurman,
Publisher: Riverhead Hardcover
ISBN: 1573220906   DDC: 294.3420423  Religions of Indic origin   Summary: Buddhist scholar Robert Thurman (yes, he is the father of Uma) was named one of Time magazine’s 25 most influential people in 1997.
Here’s why: Thurman has a knack for helping laymen understand the
teachings and history of Buddhism while also explaining why it has taken root in the West. Thurman was the first Westerner to be ordained as a monk in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition after studying under the Dalai Lama in 1964. In this highly polished memoir he tells the story of his pupilage under His Holiness, which was a frolic in Sunday school compared to the task of integrating Buddhism into cold war America. This is an optimistic and highly satisfying discussion of how Buddhism has shaped the life of one fascinating scholar as well as the course of Western spirituality. –Gail Hudson
Review: Showing my hand, first, I studied religion under Thurman as an undergraduate at Columbia. First, this was meant to be a popular, non-academic book and not a treatise entirely on the history of Tibet or an analysis of its culture. Thurman’s ‘Central Philosophy of Tibet’ is near as dry and distant as books come; he had a reputation as a translator before he had one as popular. Which no doubt he is– his hand is laid bare in the fact that he’s chosen to spend his life educating people in the West of Dharma, of trying to protect and help the Tibetan people (whom he thinks were special, unique, and good….), and achieve some kind of an enlightened polity….

He IS trying to change the world with this book. Necessarily, when you introduce a child to America, you don’t always tell ALL of the truth (which is a tough thing to do anyway); when you teach a child about Christianity, you tell of the Gospels and NOT of Revelations, the anti-Semitism of Luther, or the excesses of many of the Popes– and no one says that these are bad things. Thurman is introducing a culture and an idea– him having been a monk it’s going to be a bit of a polemic (which if you ever read a lot about Tibet most of it is…. strangely only excluding much of what the Dalai Lama has written….. and ‘The Dragon in the Land of Snows’– a history of Tibet…) It’s preachy and it is a polemic…..

Perhaps the book would have been left better off without the political agenda added at the end. You could say that it helps people to think about WHAT would be good; how could they change their world toward some kind of Shambala BUT it provides a huge way for people to slam this text. Buy this if you want (albeit a bit polemical) an introduction into Buddhism and what went on in Tibet– it’s a fun, easy read. It’s worth your time.

How to know God the soul’s journey into the mystery of mysteries
Deepak Chopra
Publisher: New York : Three Rivers Press, c2000.
ISBN: 0609600788   DDC: 291.44   LCC: BL53  Comparative religionReview: This is a very thought-provoking book, and for anyone with an open mind it will at least give them a new way of looking at the nature of reality and how it might be possible to “know” God. Because Chopra takes a fresh approach and does not follow any particular dogma, some may have a bit of a knee-jerk response and write him off as “New Age.” The search for a deeper understanding of God, however, is as old as humankind itself, and hardly started with the “New Age” movement in the modern world. Hinduism and Christianity are two of the world’s great religions, and each has contributed great insights to that ancient search. Anyone with a true spiritual motivation will be able to recognize certain universal religious truths revealed in other religions besides their own, even though there may be many differences in terms of methods, traditions, and so on.  There’s no problem whatsoever with the basic teachings of either Hinduism or Christianity, but the problem is the growing tendency toward fundamentalism in both of those religions. With a fundamentalist viewpoint, one sees only the outer form of one’s own and other religions, and completely loses the insight into the deeper underlying truths.

whole book in a few days over the holiday vacation and have since
started over taking a chapter a day and really absorbing the contents.

Lost Years of Jesus Revealed

Charles F. Potter,

Publisher: Fawcett

ISBN: 0449130398   Edition: Mass Market Paperback; 1985-11-12

Summary: For centuries Christian students of the
Bible have wondered where Jesus was and what he did during the so-called
“eighteen silent years” between the ages of twelve and thirty. The
amazing and dramatic scrolls of the great Essene library found in cave
after cave near the Dead Sea have given us the answer at last. That
during those “lost years” Jesus was a student at this Essene school is
becoming

increasingly apparent. Scholars are gradually admitting the startling
parallels between his doctrines and vocabulary and those of the Essenes
and their “Teacher of Righteousness,” who was evidently

executed nearly a century before the birth of Jesus. It is to his title
and authority that Jesus probably succeeded.

The Seven Storey Mountain

Thomas Merton,

Publisher: Octagon Books

ISBN: 0882548433   Edition: Textbook Binding; 1983-05

Summary: This classic of
faith has touched millions of lives.

In 1941, a brilliant, good-looking young man decided to give up a
promising literary career in New York to enter a monastery in Kentucky,
from where he proceeded to become one of the most influential writers of
this century.   Thomas  Merton’s first book,

The Seven Storey Mountain, describes his
early doubts, his conversion to a Catholic faith
of extreme certainty, and his decision to take
life vows as a Trappist. Although his
conversionary piety sometimes falls into
sticky-sweet abstractions, Merton’s
autobiographical reflections are mostly wise,
humble, and concrete. The best reason to read
The Seven Storey Mountain
, however, may be
the one Merton provided in his introduction to
its Japanese translation: I seek to speak to
you, in some way, as your own self. Who can tell what this may mean? I myself do not know, but if you listen, things will be said that are perhaps not written in this book. And this will be due not to me but to the One who lives and speaks in both.

Fourteen Lessons in Yoga Philosophy
Yogi Ramacharaka
Publisher: Yoga Publication Society
ISBN: 0911662014   Edition: Hardcover; 1986-06-01Review: For readers who want to start exploring the philosophies of the Hindu yogis, this is the perfect book. More than a book, it is a treatise that both enlightens and inspires. It starts with an explanation of the seven principles of what man is made of, paying special attention to what we don’t see ( a.k.a. the auras). Ramacharaka not only affirms but confirms the power of human thought, and how a life can be transcended by it. We are what we think, our thoughts feed our actions. This particular philosophy starts with the principle that man is a spirit within a body, a mass of energy, and not the other way around; a common idea of the western philosophies. The book goes on to explain various techniques used in occults, good ones as well as bad ones.

The lesson I found the most fascinating was the one about life after death, that is death as we know it; because after reading about the different stages our spirit goes through once it leaves our body, you will never see – or at least think – of death in the same way. The only thing I can say on my behalf is that I expect to be fully awake to experience at least half of what is being described here.

If the reader is searching for answers to profound questions regarding the yogi philosophy he will probably have to go elsewhere. This is a book for beginners. It was written to wet one’s appetite, to spark the willfull search of knowledge, and many readers will be taken aback by the simplicity of it all. Ramacharaka shows us that life, when lived according to nature, is quite a simple business, and therein lies the wonder of it. It is both quick and majestic and, true to his philosophy, guides us to see death as we know it as a form of preparation to be better each time we choose to come back and experience new lives.

Even if we don’t agree with the idea of reincarnation, it will pay to have a look at it as an outsider, and consider the principles (such as the one for cause and effect), that we can see take place in our world once and again.

Read it, and welcome the peace and the wonder in your own life.  Karina A. Suarez (Walt Disney World, USA)

Science of breath: a complete manual of the Oriental breathing philosophy of physical, mental, psychic and spiritual development
by Yogi, Ramacharaka
Publisher: Chicago, Yogi Publication Society, [c1905]
ISBN: 0911662006   Review:

This is an excellent beginning book on breathing for anyone who is interested in yoga. It covers the importance of breathing, basic respiratory physiology and the relationship between science and yoga.

The authors of this book are credible and have excellent professional credentials and established practices. They are associated with the Himalayan Institute in Honesdale, PA that has a long standing commitment to getting science, modern psychology and yoga together. Many of their publications are excellent and certainly this one is as well.

I think any yoga practitioner at any level will benefit from this book and even very experienced people will learn a lot. As the title suggests, this book focuses on the practical aspects of breathing and provides a good foundation or launching point for moving on to pranayama practice. However, the value it adds is the tie in to modern science.

As part of my living, I do workshops on such topics as meditation, pranayama and biofeedback, loving-kindness practices and other topics that integrate East and West. Before becoming involved in psychology and spirituality, I was both a research scientist and Teaching Fellow in Physiology. While I am not an expert at respiratory physiology or a top pranayama practitioner, I have an established yoga practice and enough expertise to judge the merit of this book. Energize Your Life by Nick Rowley  Publisher: One Spirit ISBN-10: 1903296366Review: This book is not only a great sourcebook of recipes and physical techniques for rejuvenation and exercise, but is a tribute to the effect that great design and use of color can have in making something memorable and fun to read. It is a pleasure just thumbing through it and even more so that the information is so substantial. It is divided into categories underscored by specific vegetarian recipes and moves from yoga, Chinese internal exercise, and some Pilates. It is like several books combined and makes an economical alternative to getting a whole stack of related items. Definitely worth buying!

The detox diet: a how-to & when-to guide for cleansing the body
by Elson M. Haas
Publisher: Berkeley, Calif. : Celestial Arts, c1996.
ISBN: 0890878145   DDC: 613.2   LCC: RA784

Notes: Includes bibliographical references (p. 126).
Book Details: Language: eng
Physical Description: 128 p. : ill. ; 24 cm.Review: This book presents an easy to follow guide to beginning a simple detox diet and proceeding further into juice or water fasting, should you desire. Very few special purchases are needed to follow the plan. The purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables are the main expense. Vitamins and supplements are listed that may be of benefit, but they are not a necessity. Herbs are briefly touched on. If you are interested in incorporating herbs in your plan you will need to seek an additional resource.

There are separate chapters on nicotine, caffeine, drug, sugar and alcohol withdrawal and detox plans and supplements discussed for each. Physical effects of using each of these products are described in a rational manner without preaching.

It is a sensible guide to beginning a new journey to healthier eating. I found the plan easy enough to follow without feeling deprived. The outline to transition into fasting will guide me when I am ready.

This is a small book, but surprisingly complete. There is a list of resources for in-patient detox centers as well as support groups for specific problems (drug abuse, etc.)
