Dell Dimension4600 Series Computer The Dimension 4600 computer is a capable desktop that can be configured to please almost anyone. Included is a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 processor, 512MB of speedy 400MHz DDR memory and a high-end ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card. Included is a CD-RW and DVD-ROM drive and floppy disk drive. Dell’s flexible online configurator makes choosing easy. It comes with Windows XP and a Western Digital Caviar SE EIDE 160 GB hard drive.Dell continues to use the aesthetically pleasing, two-tone Midnight Gray color scheme on the Dimension 4600. The Dimension 4600 uses a standard minitower case that can accommodate a graphics card. The Dimension 4600′s case opens via a button-released, removable side panel. The Dimension 4600′s connectivity is more mainstream than progressive. The front panel gives you the standard pair of USB 2.0 ports plus a speaker output, but the ports are easier to access now than they were with previous Dimension models because they are no longer angled down toward the floor. The rear port is packed with legacies, such as a PS/2 keyboard and mouse, plus serial and parallel ports. You also get a generous six USB 2.0 ports, a 10/100 Ethernet port, and another set of audio connections. Our evaluation unit’s graphics card offers both VGA and DVI ports for analog or digital displays. The hard drive occupies one internal drive bay, leaving only one other free. There are no other external drive bays. Two PCI slots are free. A couple of 256MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM modules occupy two of the four available DIMM slots. The Dimension 4600′s motherboard uses the Intel 865PE chipset, supporting Pentium 4 processors with an 800MHz frontside bus. Included is 512MB of PC3200 (400MHz) DDR SDRAM, which is adequate for most computing needs. Because the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro includes 128MB of onboard RAM, the main system memory is free to focus on overall system performance. The 9800 Pro is a leading 3D graphics card for computer gaming. Clearly intended as a jack-of-all-trades, this Dimension 4600 includes an NEC 48X/24X/48X CD-RW drive for backups, audio CD burning, and other common activities. It also has a Lite-On 16X DVD-ROM with a Dell-branded version of the CyberLink PowerDVD player for playing DVDs. The 160GB Western Digital hard drive offers lots of room for games, MP3s, photos, and so on. Videophiles may want to upgrade to one of the larger-capacity hard drives that Dell offers, or you can add a hard drive later in the remaining free internal drive bay. The 1.44MB floppy drive is added for file backup and for sharing with other users. Added bonus: Installed on the computer is thousands of dollars worth of software, resources and everything you need to set up an internet business. |

Eclipse Computer Light

Eclipse Computer LightIf your room’s lit, as most are, by fittings hanging from the ceiling, you’ll be wanting to set up your monitor so that you don’t see reflections of the lights in it. Indirect lighting solves this problem. Indirect lights don’t point straight at the thing you want lit. Instead, they point at a reflector and the light that bounces off the reflector does the work of lighting the area. The One Tech Eclipse Computer Light is an indirect lighting gadget for your computer work area, made to sit on top of your monitor. There’s a standard PL-13W folded fluorescent tube in the base of the Eclipse, behind a removable clear plastic lens. It therefore shines upward… …at the adjustable reflector, which can be tilted fore and aft, and slid up and down on the plastic frame that doubles as a carry handle. You get further adjustment potential from the design of the Eclipse’s base. It’s got a couple of strips of double-sided tape for attachment to the top of your monitor, and it can be tilted back and forth, which allows you to further customize the Eclipse’s light distribution. You can replace this with fresh pieces as you experiment with different placement options. Setting upThe Eclipse light is an American 110 volt 60 Hertz unit. But even if you were in a country with 220/240V 50Hz, you can easily operate low power American appliances that don’t care about the AC frequency difference – the Eclipse, like most gadgets, doesn’t. But you have to use a step-down autotransformer from a place like Jaycar Electronics. You just have to stick the thing on the top of your monitor, turn it on, and the lamp lights what you want it to. Using itThere’s no rule of the universe that says an Eclipse has to be put on top of a monitor. You could put it on a shelf to one side of your workstation, for instance. Actually, the range of adjustment the base and reflector give you would even let you attach the thing to a suitably painted wall, sticking out horizontally, and still get a nice even light over the area below. If you want to use the Eclipse as your only light, you can; the light spill gives you dim illumination of a whole ordinary-sized room. An interesting side effect of the adjustable Eclipse design is that it makes it easy to light your face brightly, for webcam purposes. It gives you a cleaner video picture. The Eclipse’s lamp is not a cheap triphosphor one; it’s a nice full-spectrum unit. It’s actually got a 6400 Kelvin color temperature rating, which makes it a “daylight” lamp with a pretty clean bluish-white output. The Eclipse’s PL-13W lamp, by the way, is a standard item. You can buy replacement PC-13Ws from One Tech, but you should also be able to get them from any lighting shop. The PL-13W is rated for a respectable 10,000 hour life. |
